WHAT IS DHA?

Ah, the key ingredient in our sunless tanning products that make us look like a bronze goddess! As a sunless artist growing your empire, it’s important for you to know about this very special ingredient because it’s the backbone of the service that you offer! Being able to explain the science behind why your client gets a tan-like appearance from sunless tanning, not only helps to make your clients feel more comfortable with what is actually happening during their appointment, but it also helps your clients build confidence in YOU as a service provider because of the knowledge that you’re able to share with them. So what is the actual name of the ingredient that gives us the sunless glow of our dreams? DHA, or Dihydroxyacetone, is an effective sun-free tanning additive that allows us to experience a natural looking tan-like appearance. It’s a pretty cool ingredient, as you can see, but you may be wondering how it actually works. And I’m here to give you the tea, sis! DHA is a 3-carbon sugar that interacts with the amino acids on the outermost layer of the skin. The chemical reaction that takes place is what causes a darkening effect and that’s how we get that beautiful sun-kissed appearance. This reaction that occurs between your skin and the ingredient, DHA, is what creates the amazing opportunity to get a safe, healthy glow. Now I don't know about you, but I think the actual science behind how Dihydroxyacetone works is super freakin’ cool. Not only that, but it’s important to understand this process in order to properly customize your sunless solution for each client that walks through your door or steps into your  mobile tent. 

You may notice that when purchasing tanning solution, there’s usually different percentages of DHA to choose from that typically range from 6% for a light tan to 12% for a darker tan. Therefore, if you’re looking to create a sunless glow that is more on the light side, it’s best to stick to a DHA percentage that’s on the lower end of this range. Also, when choosing which percentage you want to use for your client, it’s important to take their natural skin tone into account. If the percentage of DHA is too high for a client that has a fair skin tone, Skin Type 1 for example, you are taking the risk of causing there to be the dreaded “orange” tint to the skin. Which is everyone's number one fear when getting a sunless tan, right!?

Getting a spray tan is always an exciting moment because of the immediate gratification from seeing that beautiful bronze color or crisp tanline. It’s important that you and your client’s understand that the instant color they see from their spray tan is only a color guard to help you as the artist see where you’re spraying. The ingredient, DHA, is actually clear. Therefore, the final color of the spray tan will only be visible after a 24-hour development period.
