What Causes Uneven Fading of Spray Tans
Mar 19, 2023One of the top spray tan goals we always aim for is to provide our clients with a tan that looks as flawless as possible, even while fading! Unfortunately, uneven fading does happen from time to time. So, what causes it? There’s a few different things that can factor into the way the tan wears, how evenly it fades and the longevity of the color overall. The importance of exfoliation is one aspect of spray tan prep that we’ve talked about fairly extensively. That’s why it should be no surprise that exfoliation and lack thereof should always be taken into consideration when trying to minimize uneven fading of a sunless tan. Let’s dive deeper into the roles that exfoliation plays in pre and post tan prep when it comes to fading.
Lack of Exfoliation
Exfoliating prior to a spray tan or an at-home DIY tan is a necessity when it comes to avoiding evenness during the entire lifespan of the tan. The reason we harp so heavily on pre-tan exfoliation is because of the massive role it plays in preparing the skin to evenly distribute the spray tan solution. Exfoliating allows the dead skin cells that are hanging out on the top layer of the skin to be removed prior to the skin receiving the tan. This creates a fresh new canvas for the tan to develop on, which is the ultimate goal for flawless results! If exfoliating is not done prior to a spray tan, the client can expect to experience premature and uneven fading.
Excess Exfoliation
Guess what!? Excess exfoliation also plays a role in uneven fading when it comes to spray tanning. You might be thinking, “didn’t you just say exfoliating is a must!?” Yes, girl, it is! While exfoliating prior to the tan helps create a flawless result, exfoliating after a tan will create unevenness and faster fading. Remember, sunless tans develop on the top layer or the skin. This means that whenever there’s additional exfoliation to the skin, the tan will start to be removed.
Excess exfoliation can take place from:
✔️ Shower Scrubs
✔️ Products containing mineral oils
✔️ Excessive sweating
Yes, friend, you read that right! Excessive sweating can also lead to uneven fading. I know this isn’t the best news for all the gym girlies. However, clients may notice this uneven fading take place when wearing tight clothing that rubs against the skin. For example, working out with a tight sports bra while sweating can cause the tan to be exfoliated off in certain areas.
Luckily, these situations can be avoided and remedied with proper education and planning! In your post tan care instructions that are provided to clients, make sure these considerations are noted and talked about with your clients prior to their appointments so they get the best experience possible.
