Tanning Tip: Spray Tanning Larger Body Types

Dec 09, 2021

One of the reasons I LOVE spray tanning, is because it is for literally e v e r y o n e!  Every single person, no matter what size, shape, or ethnicity you are, can benefit from spray tanning!

Unfortunately, it’s common for women with larger body types to feel that spray tanning isn’t for them or they may feel more uncomfortable during the process as a whole. We all probably remember the first time we stepped into a spray tan tent as a client and how vulnerable we felt. Eeek, a stranger is just inches away from our basically naked bodies and all of our insecurities rush through our minds! That’s totally normal! However, being the professional Glow Boss that you are, you know that it’s your job to ease the minds of all your clients so that they can have the most pleasant, comfortable experience possible.

With that being said, one of the great things about being a sunless biz owner is that you get to meet all kinds of different people. That’s why it’s super important to make sure that you are prepared to spray every body type! We always want to make sure that no matter what client steps through your salon door or into your mobile tent, that they get the absolute BEST looking tan from you.

When it comes time to blow your clients out of the water as you slay their spray tan, here’s a few tips on how to make your technique top notch for women with larger body types:

  • For larger breasted clients, spray under the breasts first (tip: you may want to spray the area and then add powder after drying to reduce smudging).
  • Be diligent about drying! Skin to skin contact can cause smudging and an increase in sweating, so make sure you’re drying your clients thoroughly after spraying each area.
  • If you see any sort of sweating happen, wipe the area and thoroughly dry it before spraying. Sweat can cause the tan to not develop as well or cause unevenness of the tan. If you notice drips of sweat, blend the area as quickly as possible to prevent any further issues. Side note: the X-TAN Blending Brush is a bomb azz tool to help you blend out little oopsies just like this!
  • Find ways to move your clients to stretch out any skin folds to get into all the areas of the body. For example, have the client reach to one side to stretch out any wrinkles and crevices on that side before you spray. After spraying the area that is stretched out, make sure to dry, dry, dry! If the client is noticeably warm and you think sweat could form in those areas, add powder before the client relaxes their side.
  • Larger body types can sometimes create more heat, therefore if you’re noticing that with a client, it could be beneficial to have a fan going or keep the room more cool so that the client can stay as comfortable as possible.
  • At the end of your spray tan, it’s helpful to powder the entire body to prevent transfering of the solution to other areas if skin were to touch as well as to cut down on smudging in general. It can also be a good idea to powder areas immediately after you tan them to avoid any transfer under the arms or between the legs.
