How To Care For Your Spray Tan
Dec 02, 2021Glow Boss, you and I both know that getting an overall FIRE tan is a 50/50 game. You HAVE to rely on the client to follow pre and post tan care instructions if the tan is going to come out as beautifully as it possibly can. I’m sure we have allllll been there when you’ve very clearly relayed your instructions and you still get a text from a client saying, “my tan faded in two days” or “I don’t know what happened.. my palms are orange!” Girl.. no skin to skin contact, that’s what happened (good thing we have X-TAN remover spray amiright!? ;)).
It can be frustrating when your goal is to provide the best service to a client and something happens after the fact and you get the dreaded text of panic. The fact of the matter is, post-tan care is just as crucial to the overall awesomeness of a spray tan as pre-tan care. Properly caring for a spray tan can really affect the longevity of the overall tan as well as how well it fades. Trust me, nobody likes lookin’ cray cray when their tan starts to come off, okay!
In order to keep your clients in-the-know on what to do to best care for their tan, we’ve broken it down for you. Here’s a list of post-tan care instructions that you can relay to your clients so that they know exactly how to get the most out of their investment with you!
- The first rinse should be with JUST warm water after the allotted time. No soap, shampoo or conditioner should be used during the first rinse because the tan will continue to develop for 24 hours! This will vary depending on the type of solution you choose to use. Rapid tans generally require a first rinse after 2-4 hours, while classic solutions will require a client to wait 8-12 hours to rinse.
- Tap dry after showers to cut down on excess exfoliation.
- Don’t use any products that will exfoliate the skin until the client is ready to take their tan off (loofas, body scrubs, chemical exfoliants, etc.).
- Moisturize 1-2 times a day (Pro-Tip: carry tan extend lotion as a retail product and have your clients purchase that to use as their moisturizer!).
- Stay hydrated! Drink lots of water so the body is staying hydrated from the inside out.
- Use products that are made with natural and organic ingredients that won’t strip the tan. Products that have ingredients such as alcohol in them will cause the tan to fade faster!
- When spraying perfume, it’s advised to spray on clothing and not directly onto skin so that the alcohol in the perfume does not strip the tan.
- Try to shave less frequently! You can shave while having a spray tan, but using light pressure is advised!
- Use sunscreen! Spray tan solution does not have SPF in it, therefore you can still get burnt. Aside from wearing SPF for skin health, if you get burnt and peel while having a spray tan, your tan will also peel, leaving you looking blotchy.
As the expert, it’s your job to let your client know what’s up with how to keep their tan looking gorgeous. Especially since they’re basically a walking advertisement for you! Luckily, there’s lots of ways you can get this information to your clients so they know ahead of time what they should do!
