How Spray Tanning Benefits Overall Skin Health

Dec 11, 2022

Spray tanning is a revolution that reaches far beyond the aesthetic appearance of bronzed, glowy skin. It’s an industry that goes deeper than just the physical by reaching into the internal health and overall well being of the skin and body. There’s a very real reason that sunless tanning is a billion dollar industry that continues to expand and grow each year. In this day and age, there are so many more people who are aware and vigilant about the way they treat their bodies, the products that go into and onto their bodies and how those things affect their overall health. This is why we see such a surge in the amount of organic, vegan and cruelty free foods, skincare products, clothing, etc. taking over the market for consumer goods. Everything is moving toward a wellness focused approach, especially when we look at the strategy behind the marketing of these items. For the sunless industry, this provides a great opportunity because with the shift of society’s mind toward wellness, comes the realization that sun exposure and UV tanning is damaging to the skin and, in some cases, can be life threatening.

One of the biggest reasons the sunless industry has become so popular and successful over the years, is because of the increased knowledge that people have regarding the dangers of sun exposure. Not only does UV damage cause increased signs of aging, such as hyper pigmentation and wrinkles, but it also increases the potential for skin cancer. Although most of the moles on our bodies are completely benign, to protect our health, it’s important to get regular skin checks to ensure we don’t have any spots on our bodies that are turning into cancerous lesions because early diagnosis can be life saving.

As a beauty professional and sunless tanning expert, it’s crucial for you to be knowledgeable about the skin and what affects a client’s skin health. This comes down to the products you choose to use on clients, the ingredients that are included in your solutions and how to spot areas of the skin that could be cause for concern. It's important to acknowledge that since we are not doctors, we cannot diagnose or recommend any form of treatment if we were to see an area on the body during an appointment that could be concerning. However, as spray tan artists, we are in a unique position where we can see different areas on the body and skin during an appointment, which allows us to inform clients of anything we see on the skin that they may not be aware of.

The most dangerous form of skin cancer is known as melanoma. According to Impact Melanoma, “Approximately one person dies of melanoma every hour in the U.S.” Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that can start as a mole already present on the skin or it can start as a new spot that is only about the size of a pinhead. As time goes on, melanoma grows larger and deeper. Early detection is key once melanoma has started to form because, “melanoma that is diagnosed in its early stages has a high chance of being completely cured.” If the cancer is left to grow, it can spread to other areas of the body and become life threatening.

It’s often thought that melanoma and other forms of skin cancer are only something to worry about once we get older, however, it is not uncommon to see individuals in their 20’s and 30’s developing skin cancer. Impact Melanoma has put together an easy way to identify spots on the skin that could be cause for concern according to the ABCDE signs of melanoma as shown in the graphic below.

If you’re wanting to become more educated on how you can go about identifying different forms of skin cancer, recognizing warning signs and understanding the real risks that are involved with developing melanoma, Impact Melanoma has a training for professionals called, The Skinny on the Skin. They also go over how you can best talk with your clients if you see something that may be of concern so they’re aware that they should seek advice from a doctor. Being a sunless artist means that you’re so much more than someone who provides a beauty service. It’s your duty to continue to educate your clients about the risks associated with UV tanning and sun exposure and why the benefits of spray tanning go far beyond the exterior look it provides.

Overall, knowledge is power when it comes to being a successful beauty professional.
